Trail Guides
Here is a more extensive list of useful trail guides. Some are focused on specific areas or trails.
cover Mt. Whitney: The Peak and Surrounding Highlands (Hiker's Guide to the High Sierra) by Thomas Winnett, Lucille Winnett (Illustrator); Paperback
cover Mount Whitney: The Complete Trailhead-to-Summit Hiking Guide

cover Hiking the Sierra Nevada (FalconGuide)
by Barry Parr; Paperback

Lots of great day hikes with good maps and trail descriptions.  Good starting point for introductory hikes in the Sierras. Very few long backpacking trips.
cover Starr's Guide to the John Muir Trail and The High Sierra Region (a Sierra Club Totebook/Fold-Out Map Inlcuded) by Walter Augustus Starr, Douglas Robinson (Editor); Paperback

This is the classic description of the John Muir Trail in Sierra Club Totebook format. Still highly useful, but a bit dated due to minor re-routings of the trail. May also want to consider the book by Winnett.
cover Guide to the John Muir Trail
by Thomas Winnett, Kathy Morey; Paperback
cover The John Muir Trail
by Don, et al; Paperback
cover Hiking and Climbing California's Fourteeners
cover Lonely Planet Hiking in the Sierra Nevada
