Backpacking Trail Tips

  • Weather - As your trip date approaches, check the Sierra weather forecast. Evaluate and adjust your gear and clothing versus the weather forecast.

  • Blisters—Just about everyone gets blisters. As soon as you start feeling a hotspot or tingling feeling, stop, take off your boots, and soak your feet in a cold stream.

  • Mosquitoes—Easily dealt with: Bring repellent with a high concentration (70% or more) of DEET

  • Sun—Play it safe and don’t underestimate the UV intensity. Use a waterproof, UPF 15 or higher sunscreen. Same for lip protection.

  • Eye Protection: UV intensity and glare in the High Sierra is intense. Sunglasses are a necessity.

  • Altitude sickness (gradation of symptoms).

  • Bears — Don’t underestimate them. Know what your bear plan is and what is required on your permit. Are you using bear canisters or are you hanging your food? Hanging food correctly is a skill; make sure you know how to do it.

  • Leave No Trace! Leave No Trace principles For more information see Leave No Trace web site.

  • More Information - For more information on these check the books in Backpacking Skills or the excellent information at REI.com or Backpacker.com
